Experiencing the Mandelbulb

Final contribution

Student: Leon Möhring
Genre: CG
Length: 42 sec
Format: MP4
Production technique: 3D Animation,
Projection Mapping, Compositing, Mandelbulb 3D, After Effects

Details: I wanted to create an audiovisual installation. Since the technique of projection mapping, where you project an animation on a 3D surface, really fascinated me, I decided to dive into this topic. While experimenting I stumbled across the mandelbulb, which is based on the Mandelbrot formula, but creates 3D shapes. Since you have a lot of formulas you can combine and iterate you can build a lot of different shapes just by changing numbers and adding more formulas. This video shows how I experienced the mandelbulbs. I did the animations in Mandelbulb 3D and composited them in After Effects. To support the fractal look and make it more appealing I projected the animations on different sized rectangular shapes.

Process

Mass media and surveillance

Homework #4

In this task we were divided in groups to make a short video about a given topic. At first we had to define composition rules which all teammembers can apply to their own version.

Seamless looping GIFs

Homework #3

The task was to create a few short looping GIFs. My idea was to photograph ordinary objects and create a mesmerizing loop by having a hole in the center.

My WOW moment

Homework #2

As soon as I enter the room all goes dark. The room has dark walls, a wooden floor and is quite large. The only light source are the two massive panoramic screens on the walls that face each other. I sit down on the wooden floor between the two screens. There is a woman in a wheelchair driving through a park. The camera is following her. The only sound I hear is her wheelchairs squeaking and rattling noises. At the same time on the screen to the right you see the park out of her point of view. Then the left screen shows a portrait shot of a man and I notice you were following his POV and realize, that he seems to chase the woman in the wheelchair. The woman knows, because she keeps looking back scared. While I try to catch up with the views of both protagonists the perspectives changes occasionally to cinamatic and portrait shots. I start to get an uneasy feeling because I don’t know which view to follow and I get more stuck between the weird relationship of the two protagonists as the narrative continues to develop. I have the urge to step in and help the woman, which makes me feel like a helpless witness.

As it ends I am kinda disturbed of what I have just witnessed and realize how deeply I immersed in the narrative. What really fascinated me about this experience is, that you had to decide actively who’s view you gonna witness. Additionally there was no single word spoken and you had no names of the protagonists, but you felt very familiar with them.
