>> FIND THE CODE! <<

Concept:

How do we encounter stories regarding mental health that are loaded with intimidating emotion and pain? And how do we approach important topics which are still widely tabooed in our society? I tried to overcome this hurdle by producing images that are influenced by both, humans and machines. The pictures should view complex phenomenons from a different angle and allowing the audience to find a different way to connect and practice empathy.

Process and Reflection:

Following those questions, generative art seemed like a great opportunity to create artworks including a non-human perspective.  Therefore I used processing a computer programming tool that focuses on image generation.
I gained a basic understanding of the program and the implemented language java. I found the transition between personal story and line of code to be particularly challenging because it is simply not possible to express complex feelings in numbers that could influence the aesthetic of an image. I then decided to convert text into a binary code and afterward into decimal numbers to manipulate the outcome. I see this kind of work in an exhibition setting displayed right next to the stories and the possibility to get in touch with the people behind them.

HOMEWORK #5 – VIRTUAL SPACES

Concept:

My Mozilla hub intended to visualize my imagination on the transition between life and death. I wanted to create a sense of spatial infinity, warmth, and familiarity. The place should ideally convey a zen-like atmosphere by avoiding distracting elements. This work felt particularly personal to me because I had the opportunity to create a tangible image of a highly abstract concept that is strongly connected to uncertainty and oftentimes anxiety, and share it with others.

NEURAL
CREATION

HOMEWORK #4 – GROUPWORK

Concept:

Our group examined the idea of neural creation by generating animations using only faces that were created by artificial intelligence. As the animation continues the depicted characters get older, which’s supposed to symbolize the way an ai learns over time as much as we do when we grow older. We came up with certain guidelines such as a 3D camera ride through the faces, a colorful background, and electronic music to find a coherent aesthetic while creating very individual pieces.

HOMEWORK #3 - LOOPS

Concept:

I went to Nord-Süd-Fahrt to take a video of the traffic. I tried to capture the conflict and the change of perspective on this street. It was built almost 60 years ago with the intention to connect the northern and southern parts of cologne directly. It used to be a progressive idea that nowadays seems to be rather outdated. The cars going back and forth should represent that contrast.

HOMEWORK #2 – WOW MOMENT

This thing looks too golden and too huge to be a pineapple. My Brother and I join the others. Is it even worth it to spend our time here? I mean just look around, do you realize where we are?
It doesn't get any less strange, a couple of steps ahead we found ourselves feeling blue. Slightly darker and a lot more crowded. Let it be people, let it be Neighbors of a drowned empire. I've never pictured it as loud and as hot under the surface. The Stream turns into never ending drops, ending up in an extraterrestrial vessel, waiting for a ride. Buckle up!

We feel a loss of gravity and a sudden rise. Before realizing what we got into, we hit the ground. Our first glimpse of the end. Driven by the intention to save the city, we and our competitors headed for the victory. At this moment it struck my mind, this isn't an ordinary race. There wasn't a single doubt no more. Rushing along the track, encountering a flood of lights. Blue flames turn red, I’m scared. Let us find another way out. Concerned about the demon's hand, I squeeze the wheel. How could it burn underwater?

The final bridge leads us to a finish line, which looks rather round. Majestic buildings expand before they collapse. Bricks seem to fall a little too fast down here. Suddenly the end is near, we make it through. Now, we are on top of a distant world. Gravity returns, we settle and leave the ocean. Again, everyone spreads out, entering a reality full of phan- tasies.
